I took the Playmates ST:XI Tricorder and sanded off all the chrome with steel wool. I then painted it with Testors Flat Gray model paint. Now it
looks a bit closer to the movie prop.
I took the Playmates ST:XI Communicator apart and removed the cardboard piece with the painted nebula mural (or whatever its supposed to be) and wrapped it in a small piece of aluminum foil. I them smoothed it out and put the whole thing back together. The whole process took about 5 mins and it looks a lot more like the actual movie prop. I also painted in the Starfleet insignia on the cover silver because I thought it looked better.
