Does anyone know what this was used for in the movies. I heard back when TWOK first came out that these wheels signifide the wearers origin of species.

Yes that's where it goes on the white shoulder strap here is a pic of kirks uniform from the back and yes he is hugging his son lol..
Now from what I heard about the wheel it's for those to only get in certain places of the ship I think. Hope this helps! Brian

They are referred to as a "Federation Security Device" Simple meaning is that each device had certain security clearance, allowing the wearer in to
restricted areas..
     
The same way wearing this
