I've been looking through the posts on this forum and gradually building up the courage to tackle the costume (using a pattern I bought from Roddenberry.com, which ironically was made by the very man who never kept his promise to make this costume for me), and I'm about ready to buy the fabric. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with command red, but am also thinking about sciences teal. I've seen plenty of images on the Internet, and of course on my TV screen, but computer monitors are all different and can show the same color very differently. Are there some kind of universal color numbers for the red and teal that could help me find just the right shade? Apologies if this info is already available on the site and I just haven't found it.

"The Admirable" on the old message board, in speaking about the Nemesis uniforms, wrote: The department colour cuff stripes are Wright's 1/2" bias tape in these colours: #084 berry #046 gold #466 light teal Are these shades identical to those used in the early DS9/Voyager uniforms?

Posts: 1133 Mar 18 08 12:34 PM Owner	The department colour cuff stripes are Wright's 1/2" bias tape in these colours: #084 berry #046 gold #466 light teal I find it hard to believe that they would go out and find wrights bias tape in the exact colors. PLUS Wright's bias tape is too thin.. The FC uniforms used the same spandex as the shirts..If you can dye fabric you can use these recipes Command 1 pkg. wine#10 1/2 pkg. fuchsia #12 Science 2 pkgs. royal blue #23 1 pkg. forest green #34 Engineering 1 pkg. tan #16 1/2 pkg. light green #31

Posts: 1 Aug 22 08 9:01 AM	Hello! First time poster! Dying my wool for the Voy/DS9 department colors this afternoon. I've got the RIT dye recipes that you guys posted earlier in the thread. Which method of dying do you recommend? Stove Top? Also, if you have any pointers on the ratio amount of fabric / amount of dye used as well as the length of time spent dying. Just want to make sure I get the right shade. Also, do you all use vinegar or salt to increase the PH? What about hot water and wool? Any advice from the pros would be fantastic. Thanks for your time.

Posts: 812 Sep 15 08 5:08 PM The Goto Guru Moderator	I recommend a combination of stove top and washing machine. fill machine with enough hot water to just cover the amount ofd fabric you are about to dye, no more than two/three yards at once. Soak fabric in water then place in tub or clean sink. Add 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to the washing machine and agitate to mix with water. Now place two cups of water in a small sauce pan then add your dye. Bring just to a simmer. Pour this into your machine and agitate for two minutes to properly disperse the dye in the water. Add fabric and agitate until the fabric is slightly darker than the color you are looking for (wet fabric will appear darker than it really is) then allow washing cycle to complete. Dry fabric and run a load through your washing machine with nothing but water/soap and an old towel to clean out excess dye in wash barrel. This method works well for the TOS fabric I make and the vinegar turns the RIT into an acid dye (thanks Raven!) which pushes the dye frmo the water into the fabric in larger volume and much faster, so keep a close eye on your fabric. I reccomend testing a swatch of your fabric in the bath first to get a general idea of how long to leave fabric agitating. Enjoy!

Posts: 812 Sep 16 08 12:37 PM The Goto Guru Moderator	There are a very few front loaders you can use to dye with, but I am unaware which ones they are. Your best best is to buy an old beat up top loader to keep in the garage for dying purposes.
