Posts: 2 01/11/09 10:08:44	Tags : None Hi everyone, I'm going to be attempting to make an original series dress for myself as well as a few tunics for friends for this upcoming spring. I recently found a knit fabric that had been on sale at a local fabric store. However, after putting it through the washer and dryer, I think I would really prefer something thicker and am going to try for either the velour or the double knit. Has anyone here made uniforms from both materials, and if so which material did you prefer (or rather which one was easier to work with? )? My second issue is that if I can't find the correct colors in my city, I was going to just buy the fabric in white and dye it myself. Does anyone have any links to where I might be able to find dyes in the right colors? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Posts: 19 01/11/09 20:50:42	You can get the original double-knit nylon from ISW in LA for about $36 a yard and dye it Here is a couple of recipes: COMMAND 1 jar Jaquard Acid Dye Golden Ochre 2 boxes RIT TAN 13 caps RIT liquid Kelley Green 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar 12 minutes agitating in the dye bath. SCIENCES: 1 box RIT Royal Blue 1 box RIT teal 1/2 box RIT Pearl Grey 13 caps RIT Kelley Green liquid 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar agitate 8 minutes ENGINEERING/SERVICES: 1/4 package RIT fuchsia powder 1/2 cup RIT scarlet liquid 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar Agitate 15 minutes then wash with dye bath of 1/4 cup RIT wine liquid Agitate 15 minutes Then of course, if you want to avoid all the dye headache, you can buy the pre-dyed third season fabric in all three accurate colors from Kathy P from her eBay store for $45/yard here: (order 2-3 yds for men's tunic and 3-4 yards for female dress) Make sure you tell her that you want your yardage uncut, or she will send out 2-3 separate yards, but she reminds you of this in her listing as well. Posts: 21 01/12/09 18:44:15	Good for 3 yards of fabric. Do not use a synthetic fabric like polyester as the dye will NOT take. Only the nylon or cotton velour will take these dye recipes. You can actually call ISW in LA and order by credit/debit card. Depending on what department color you want, you can actually still get the ACTUAL polyester/dacron velour from the first two seasons from www.onewaystreet.com. The only color they still carry out of the three is the red and it is now called "craft velour."

Posts: 1 09/26/09 12:45:41	Hi, I'm new here, and I need help with dying the fabric. I've found the perfect fabric but it only comes in black and white so I figured I'd just dye it. I was just wondering if anyone had used the technique that Khitrec suggested for the blue? And if so, did you by chance have a picture or a reference color of how it turned out? I didn't know if I should make a new thread for this, so I figured I'd just post it here first.

Posts: 1 10/01/09 20:00:11	I have a question about the onewaystreet.com velour. I just wanted to confirm--it's the garnet, correct? I thought perhaps I should make sure that they didn't used to have different shades of red, but only garnet now, before I place an order. It is a toss up between there and the scarlet at Weir Dolls. The scarlet seems so bright, and yet the garnet looks a little dark (on my monitor anyway--but I do favor it). Decisions! Thank you so much for the information. I would never have even found the onewaystreet site in the first place.
