I know this is an ancient post, but I wonder if Grace ever got the sketches of the inner belt from Tony, and if those are available anyone on this site.

I would like to know also. My boyfriend just bought this pattern and I have a few more questions about it.

Here's an example
Now I've examined several VOY jumpsuits and the inner belt was different..The first had a 2" wide elastic with velcro fasteners...the second had a wool gabardine strip with velcro attachments and the third was just plain 1 inch velcro strips...The blue area is where it is placed on the inside..From the secondary seams... ![]() |

Crotch not right? | #27 | ||
|
I noticed that Grace's jumpsuit didn't quite fit in the crotch area when she finally put everything together. This points out two things about
jumpsuits. As a designer and costume maker I always break out in a sweat when it comes to making jumpsuits. First they will always pull in the crotch area as
you raise your arms, since when you do raise your arms, it pulls the entire costume up and ultimately, the crotch seam rises up into the crotch area of the
wearer. Unless the costume is made from stretch Lycra, any non-stretch fabric jumpsuit is going to grab the crotch when the arms are raised. The only way
this won't occur is if the crotch is either deliberately or accidentally left very low, and for an expensive, custom made costume, this is not good.
My suggestion to get the crotch seam placement correct is to make-up the top portion and the pants portion separately in a cheaper but similar fabric to your final fabric. Make sure to use a 2 inch allowance at the waist line of the two pieces. Try them on separately. Mark with a Sharpie where the natural waistline lies on each piece, using a thin elastic drawn in at the waist cinching in each piece slightly. Make sure the pants portion is pulled up enough so that the crotch seam is at a comfortable position. The next step is to mark the natural waistline on your pattern top and pants. From this line add seam allowance to the pants portion, but on the top section add 5/8" and seam allowance. The extra 5/8" is for ease, or the little extra you need for comfort and movement. The final step is to join the two sections together at the seamlines, the join may not be a perfectly level, straight line, but you may need to adjust the natural lines to fit both the geometry of the pattern and the need to maintain a straight grainline. After the pattern adjustments are made you know the next step, make up another test garment using cheaper fabric and test fit. Make sure, in this case, the crotch seam is hitting the correct position and is comfortable when raising the arms, and is comfortable in the sitting and standing positions. If it is impossible to even slightly raise the arms without lots of crotch pulling (even though the armhole and sleeve are properly fitted), consider inserting an underarm gusset for more movement. I know making up test garments is labor intensive and not much fun, but it is the only way to get a nice fit without trashing your expensive fabric. Hope this helps!! |
